ANIMAX Studio Musix Screencaps

  1. Is it just me or has Mami improved her live game big time? I mean, she was never bad on stage, but she didn't seem to possess the kind of presence Eiko and MELL had - but now, she hardly moves during the Borderland performance and I still can hardly look away because even her expressions are captivatingly fierce. And during No buts! she looked like she wanted to be on a big stage where she could run around, pump her fist in the air, throw out some hairflips and make the audience shout out. And she sounds really good. She doesn't hit every note but she pulls off all registers and sings with emotion. I hope she keeps on improving!

Btw, I really like how Borderland's verses sound live.

And she needs to cut down the Engrish lyrics. Some of them are slowly starting to approach MELL-level awkward.

    1. Studio Musix gave Mami the chance to sing live without all the excitement when in front of a live audience. I believe she has always been as good as this studio performance, only that it doesn't show in her other live performances just because she gets too excited and energetic, focusing on performance yet compromising her voice quality.

Same here! I do think too that Mami needs to cut down her Engrish lyrics but it seems the trend's only just beginning. OTL

    2. Hmm, I do agree with you. I admit I've seen comparatively little of her live performances (some songs from her solo tours, both I've at Budokan performances, some lives at big anison events and other random stuff), but I've definitely seen some tendency to run around the stage rather than sing properly. But even standing in one place, she hasn't always sounded this good.

However, I still think she hasn't always been this good. She seems way more at home on stage than she did at the beginning of her career (which is perfectly natural: with experience comes confidence). And her charisma and stage presence have definitely increased during the years she's been around. I think I see her evolution as a performer somewhat like this: in I've at Budokan 2005 she sings pretty well, but seems a little uncomfortable on stage. I've at Budokan 2009: she's definitely comfortable on stage, but isn't the most captivating performer. Very nice vocals though! Some live from 2011 (LisAni perhaps?): she's clearly having fun on stage and holds my attention... but looking back, something still seems to be missing. Thinking about it harder, I think it might be intensity. Not to say she's had none before, but I don't remember seeing another performance this intense from her. She brings the intensity on both songs and I'm mesmerized and want to see more (but can't because my Flash Player seems to crash due to the smallest of things nowadays 'OTL). So to summarise: I think this is the first time she brings natural stage presence, visible charisma, near-flawless vocals and captivating intensity to the table in such big amounts - and so seemingly effortlessly. (Emphasis on the "I think" part; this is all probably extremely subjective. ''OTL)

But in any case, more power to her for being a very formidable live artist! I'll definitely be looking forward to her future lives!

And now that you've said it... yeah, it seems the trend is only now starting to really set in. If the track titles are anything to go by, Engrish will be featured generously on SQUARE THE CIRCLE. I'll probably choke on something out of sheer shock if Clap!Clap!Clap! and/or Don't stop me now! are completely devoid of Engrish, lol. The titles are just BEGGING for some.

(Sorry for such a long-winded comment. OTL It seems I just can't explain myself briefly and comprehensively at the same time and I'm probably too opinionated for my own good.)

    3. Nah, a long comment like that is perfectly fine. Besides, it helped you explain your thoughts very well. XD

And you're absolutely right with everything you said. I totally forgot her huge improvement from when she was just starting out in 2005 or so. Wow. You even went through all the details and levels of improvement in her live performances at every step of the way! Thumbs up for noticing that much! :)

I totally agree with you. She's improving as a live artist more and more through the years. Now, I can't wait what level of performance she would show us on her Animelo live.

I don't know if you've heard of the preview for SQUARE THE CIRCLE (the titular track) from her radio show, but from what I remember, the song indeed has a lot of Engrish lyrics on it OTL Not that it's totally a bad thing though... or so I hope XD

Anywayyy, thanks a lot for your "long-winded comment." XD My blog never gets this much comments (as compared to aibublog), you see, so I'm very grateful. (^o^)/

    4. I'm very eager to see how she does at Animelo too. I'm expecting good stuff from her.

No, I haven't heard any previews (though I've wanted to). :'C Haven't figured out how to butt in on listening to her radio show. But lots of Engrish is kind of... unsurprising. Well, I hope it will be the good kind of Engrish (just a word or line here and there, like TOY or masterpiece). And I hope she keeps the English lines short because longer ones tend to get a little laugh-worthy. *side-eyes Mirai no Tsubu lyrics*

Ah, you're very much welcome! It's nice to be able to discuss stuff like this that just randomly comes up. C: And I hope you keep doing your thing with this blog, it's nice to see even some more obscure/slightly-irrelevant-to-non-Japanese-fans stuff Mami and I've do covered well! (And keep reviewing things too! I LOVE reading music reviews.)

    5. Same here! XD
I hope the Engrish parts won't get a bit too much of a laugh-fest.

And yes! I'll make sure to keep this up: reviewing stuffs and reporting news. I'll do my best. :)
