KOTOKO vs Mami Kawada version 1.0

KOTOKO
Mami Kawada

Discography

vast, too vast

considerably less

Ballad

Some of KOTOKO's ballads are great, some tend towards fluffy nothingness. Because of her vast discography, some songs just end up bland, unoriginal, and mediocre. However, still a significant number of ballads by her shine and etch their memorable melodies. The great tunes are further amplified by KOTOKO's powerful, emotional vocals.

Verdict: Lose
Notable songs: went away, unsymmetry, Hane

With a less vast discography, Mami's ballads are almost all, if not all, great and tolerable at the very least. Her edge on this genre lies on her vocals: those chants, her softer tone, and most importantly, her delicate vibrato. A ballad need not offer over-the-top vocals brimming with power, thus, Mami's natural vocals suffice and are much suitable for this genre.

Verdict: Win
Notable songs: undelete, seed, portamento, Not fill

Rock

A genre that, undoubtedly, needs more badass, rough vocals. KOTOKO's alter ego in Outer gives us her punk rock side but this may not be for everyone's taste. As KOTOKO herself, though, a couple of rock songs are still up her sleeves, songs that boast of vocal strength and grit and varying tunes. Her vocals can definitely bring up hype and energy.

Verdict: Draw
Notable songs: Ao-iconoclast, UZU-MAKI, Bullshit!! Hard Problem!!

Soft vocals on a rock song? Yes? YES. It works, giving her the success that is JOINT. How she ends some verses with a breath exudes that rough edge. She may not have that much vocal power compared to KOTOKO, but the attitude, or even the vocal quality alone, matches a rock theme, nonetheless. Indeed, a different approach to a rock song but still not any less inferior.

 Verdict: Draw
Notable songs: JOINT, CLIMAX, masterpiece

Trance/Techno

KOTOKO has been with I've since almost the beginning, and, therefore, enjoyed the raw and fresh creativity of the group. This gave most of her older trance songs to be among the best in KOTOKO's career to date. More than that, her versatility shows, mixing trance and techno with ballad, rock, or pop but still turning out great. She won't be called the I've Queen if not for this genre, after all, back in the days.

Verdict: Win
Notable songs: SCREW, Epsilon, resolution of soul, Re-sublimity

With considerably less songs in this genre at hand, there is less to consider. However, Mami Kawada still has a lot of great trance songs. The vocal flavor and versatility are there but, unlike KOTOKO, her trance songs' successes are mostly credited and dependent on the works of the producers.

Verdict: Lose
Notable songs: SQUARE THE CIRCLE. Trill, PSI-missing, IMMORAL

Pop

Pop! Pop! Pop! Again, KOTOKO has lots of songs under this genre. And her versatility has proven how much her voice can also suit a pop song. Cheery, sometimes cutesy, or even melancholically pop-ish. Pop songs almost always lie average in comparison to other genres, and in here, KOTOKO and Mami share equally great potentials.

Verdict: Draw
Notable songs: Onaji Sora no Shita de, Wing my Way, Loop-the-Loop

Upbeat pop? Check! Midtempo? Check! Mami's pop song prowess has been proven through time. She has been singing songs in this genre since her seed album. Pop songs are not too risky, and you could almost always never go wrong with pop but then again, there is also always the risk of being generic or bland. Nonetheless, her pop songs have been a nice go-to whenever, wherever.

Verdict: Draw
Notable songs: INITIATIVE, eclipse, DREAM

Game themes

KOTOKO undoubtedly has the most game tie-ups among the I’ve girls owing to the fact that she was the I’ve Queen. With years in the industry, she has assumed a brand name for herself. Generally, her game themes vary in genres, showing a multitude of her skills as an artist - one of the reasons why she deserve to dominate the I’ve Girls Best Compilation.

Mami Kawada may not have that much game tie-up, with only about one or two a year, but this was not at all a hindrance to what she can do, to what she can show. Quality over quantity. Her game themes are nowhere near as good as that of KOTOKO but all of them are good, tolerable, lovable.

Verdict: Win
Notable songs: Restoration ~Chinmoku no Sora~, jihad, Imaginary affair

Verdict: Lose
Notable songs: IMMORAL, For our days, eclipse

Anime themes

KOTOKO still has the most anime tie-ups among the group. However, this is the case when quality was compromised over quantity. Her anime themes have mostly been fluffily ordinary and more mediocre in comparison with her game themes. Some turn out great and outstanding, but some are no more than uninteresting and unoriginal.

Verdict: Lose
Notable songs: Re-sublimity, being, Hayate no Gotoku!

Mami Kawada prides on her success more on the anime music industry. Each tie-up shows us something different, to a certain extent. Improvement was apparent, and her style has been firmly established, a style that can cater to a wider set of audience. She has done well both in and out of her comfort zone.

Verdict: Win
Notable songs: JOINT, masterpiece,
Hishoku no Sora, No buts!

Live Performance

KOTOKO wins over Mami in this aspect, hands down. Each and every one of her live performances have been close to perfection, with some even surpassing that on the CD recording. Her songs generally offer more power and that is still apparent even when sang live. On top of that, she dances too! Her performance may be less interactive, but that doesn't make her less of a live performer.

Verdict: Win

Mami Kawada's live singing career had a rough start. She went from the meek, timid singer easily run out of stamina to one that has fire, edge, and gives out an entertaining performance. She may fail to sing perfectly every time but she compensates that lack with her mobility onstage, her interactive attitude, and her fierce aura proving that she's more of a performer. Great enough.

Verdict: Lose

Versatility

KOTOKO is more versatile. She has probably delved into all genres in existence for music: pop, rock, ballad, punk, trance, techno, denpa, those mysterious types, and a combination of some genres here and there. Her ANIMAX MUSIX LIVE covers are further proof of this. It seems as if she can sing any song, her vocals flexible enough to meet the demands of various song types.

Edge: Jack of all Trades

Admittedly, compared to KOTOKO, Mami Kawada is not as versatile. She is not as involved in much genres, nor as good in some. That may be the case, but she still excels in her genres of choice. She prides of consistency, coherence, and is famed for her songs that rarely disappoint. She is less prolific, yes, but when she does release a song, they're pretty much awaited for and ultimately satisfying.

Edge: Mastery

This face-off has been on for long. It is somehow inevitable since KOTOKO and Mami Kawada have been partners in their earlier years, releasing split singles, singing for the same anime series. While comparison of the two may seem off or undesirable, this does not serve to distinguish which is the better artist, but instead, serves to show both of the artist's strengths and weaknesses.

Both have their own styles, and genres of choice, and are both great in their own respects. At the end of the day, who we choose or prefer of the two depends on our tastes and subjectivity. This just serves as a rough guide to the capabilities of these two amazing artists. So, who do you prefer?

  1. This is a really cool post and a good read. I prefer Mami Kawada, but it's hard to compare KOTOKO and Mami. I'd say it's mainly based on the I've composers instead of the vocalists.

For example on ballads, I'd say KOTOKO has better vocals for ballads, but Mami would end up winning because KOTOKO mainly has C.G Mix as the composer while Mami mainly has Nakazawa, and Nakazawa is almost always better than C.G Mix. When KOTOKO has another arranger for a ballad, she ends up being very good. Some examples are 地球-TERRA-, ひとりごと, 地に還る and ラブレター.

For rock, I'd say Mami has the edge. KOTOKO just doesn't release that many rock songs. Songs like リアル鬼ごっこ, 遮光, and her Outer songs are good, but Mami just has so many more rock songs and they're just as good if not better. KOTOKO can't beat songs like JOINT, serment, sense, and u/n.

I agree with your trance section, but KOTOKO definitely has to win the pop section. A lot of Mami's pop songs can sound a bit generic like らせん階段 and あしあと~a Happiness Marker~, but KOTOKO has so many good pop songs. There's no way Mami can beat pop songs like 覚えてていいよ, wing my way, ハヤテのごとく!, and beat.

For your anime songs section, Real Onigokko and SCREW aren't anime songs. :P But Mami still easily wins.

The rest is pretty much just like you said. Hopefully we see more Mami releases this year besides that one single. I've seems to be moving back to KOTOKO again. She got 5 I've produced songs last month, but Mami hasn't had anything since her last album.

    1. Hey there! Thanks for the compliment on this post! :)

OMG you're absolutely right, that it's based on the I've producers but since I'm not much familiar with the specific songs they did for both KOTOKO and Mami, I settled for the vocalists instead. XD Maybe it's time I get to know these stuff too.

And, I totally appreciate your opinions! :)
It's nice to get to hear opinion from someone who have known I've Sound for a longer time than I did. Your opinions are right on, admittedly, and now I feel like this post is lacking and flawed. (>_<)

I too am hoping for more Mami releases this year. I honestly expected her to get the BALDR SKY ZERO theme song when ISE said that it'll be I've produced, but then again, it's not surprising that it's still for KOTOKO. Hopefully another eroge tie-up or a new anime tie-up this year for Mami.

  2. This is going to be rather tricky for me, since I love both Mami and KOTOKO (although if it weren't for the sentimental value of Mami singing triangle, which in my opinion is one of her most underrated songs, as well as singing JOINT, KOTOKO would my favorite). You're right that both of them have their strengths and weaknesses. But you forgot to compare them in another way: popularity. And this is where my heart shatters into a million pieces. Obviously, KOTOKO is way more popular than Mami; she's even had a tour in the US, while Mami's only overseas tour that I know of was in Taiwan. Also, KOTOKO's a frequent act in Anime Festival Asia, but Mami has yet to be invited. But it doesn't matter anyway. Both are great singers, and I will continue to love them for as long as I like J-pop (unless they abruptly retire, but I still have LiSA, ClariS and Kalafina as backups).

Also, I thought KOTOKO left I've last year? Because she's having songs produced by I've again, does it mean she's returned?

And finally, I hope this year will be Mami's year. After all, her birthday's February 13, and it's 2013 (2/13/2013), so hopefully this will be the year she can finally shine and gain the popularity and recognition she's deserved for almost 12 years.

    1. Yes, popularity is a good comparison for the two, but since it is not a direct measure of an artist's capability, I didn't include it here.

But you got it so right. And that is exactly how I feel too. I am hoping that she will be invited for AFA in the future (I'll be happier if she gets to perform at AFA Philippines, if that would ever happen though). And I also wish a solo Budokan live for her, KOTOKO had hers way back in 2010.

And, yes KOTOKO had left I've already. She is just probably working with I've again for a couple of songs here and there but she has not returned, and I don't think she will. But with the current situation, I don't think we'll miss her works with I've since, again, she's still open to working with I've, she's not just an official I've girl now.

  4. There's a reason why KOTOKO's voice is rough and edgy while Mami's voice is soft: vocal type. KOTOKO is probably a "mezzo-soprano" or maybe a "contralto" (both vocal types are, in most of the cases, rough, deep and low), while Mami is a "soprano" ( sopranos have usually soft and high voices).
