Intrigued to hear some famous anime hit songs, originally sang by females, covered by male vocals? Well, here's the treat for you: a feature of the professional band behind some of the hit cover songs from K-On!, Angel Beats!, and even a couple of known Mami Kawada songs. Dig in!
Nagareda Project is a band produced by Satoshi Yaginuma of fripSide. The five band members are S Sosui (guitar/ band leader), Masahiro Kurikawa (drum), Ryuji
Momoyama (bass), Jun Anazawa (guitar) and
Yutaka Nagareda (vocal/ guitar). The band started out on NicoNico Douga, gained immense popularity and was later signed under Geneon Entertainment label.
Their debut album, Nagareda P, was released on December 1, 2010 and jam-packed with anime song covers.

The band had humble beginnings, analogous to most, if not all, people covering anime songs and posting such covers on the internet. It is not everyday that a cover band could get a big break as that experienced by Nagareda Project. They managed to break into the Japanese music market as a legitimate and professional recording band, you can only imagine how determined they can be to stay on that status.
But do they deserve all these? Definitely yes. Yutaka Nagareda's voice is strong and indeed masculine, giving songs originally sang by females a heavier and deep tonal twist. His high pitch is well-controlled and his boor-ish or dorky attitude gives his performances a hint of entertainment. Wearing those fancy masks was a great idea too, somehow gives you that analogy that they cover songs as they cover their faces. Those masks, perhaps, have also become an iconic symbol of the band.
Their covers manage to live up to expectations and equal, if not exceed, the awesomeness there is in those famous anime songs. Recently, the band is starting to take part in anison concerts as ANIMAX MUSIX.
So far, Nagareda Project is doing good. With only just about two years in the music industry, the band still has more potential to develop and unleash, and probably still more tricks up their sleeves to offer to avid anison lovers. Keep it up!
Hell yeah, man, I agree with 100% on this. I just discovered them recently too, but it came by way of a live video with them performing "Alchemy" which I thought was awesome!(huge Girls Dead Monster fan right here).
ReplyDeleteI also feel in love with their renditions of Ms. Kawada's songs as well. Which reminds me, have you heard of Bentley Jones? He did a cover of "JOINT" for one of his albums a ways back. I think it's really good and you may like it too! :D
First of all, thanks a lot for the visit and the comment (^_^)
ReplyDeleteBentley Jones... Haven't heard of him, but after listening to his version of JOINT, I must say I agree with you. I really like his rendition too :)
I never knew that even an English artist would cover Kawada's JOINT, so I'm really surprised.
You're quite welcome! I stop by pretty often, but always forget to leave a comment. Will make a better effort though! :D
ReplyDeleteI've actually been considering starting a fan-oriented blog out of my love for Faylan (GDM = close 2nd) like what you've got going here, but I always end up losing focus. After seeing someone else pour their time and energy into one though, I'm getting more and more inspired to start it up soon.
Bentley's cover surprised me too, but I'm all for cover songs if and when they're executed properly. If you look hard enough, you'd be surprised at some of the interesting takes that are out there!
Oh really!! I can't thank you enough for that. I'm really very grateful :D
ReplyDeleteSo you love Faylan! Interesting. I think there's not much or maybe no fan blog for Faylan out there yet, so I bet you'll have enough visitors. I hope you'll find more inspiration to start it up soon! :)
Yeah, most covers out there are amateurish but Bentley's and Nagareda's are just brilliant. I hope I'd get to know more of them.
I dig what you're doing, so it's no problem at all. In fact, I've actually started listening to Mami a lot more after reading your posts and it made me dig through my DVDs to watch the SAVIA Live&Life set again. So, I should be thanking you! :P
ReplyDeleteYou're actually quite right about the lack of Faylan-related blogs. I was actually taken back a bit, but it encouraged me more to get one together now... once I come up with a format and such that is.
Wow, I never knew my blog posts geared you more towards Mami. Before, I thought no one cares because the visitors hardly give any comment, or even none at all. I'm really very happy (*^^*)
ReplyDeleteThat feeling. I had that too at first, before I started this blog. Tell me if you've already put up your Faylan fan blog. I'll be your visitor~
I used to listen to Mami a lot around the time SAVIA came out, but drifted away to something else. I would occasionally put her albums on until I lent them to my then-girlfriend's cousin once and never got 'em back. I couldn't pick up new copies 'cause money was tight, so I just kept putting it off. But now, after falling in love with her music all over again, I'm definitely going to replace them soon!
ReplyDeleteAs for the blog, I too feel that most people probably wouldn't care to read and/or give input, but I find the idea to be fun and see it as a chance to honor a fantastic artist and her music! I'm considering getting things together within the next couple weeks, so in due time I should have something up. As soon as I do I'll be sure to let you know.
So you actually even buy the albums! That's nice! I don't have the resources so I can only download her songs from the net, which is kind of sad because buying her releases would help her JMusic career.
ReplyDeleteYeah, I feel you. (^_^) I actually started this blog not thinking whether people from all over the world would find my posts interesting. It's the self-fulfillment that mattered to me, I guess. It's like blogging for others and for my own too.
I wish you good luck on your endeavor! :)
I hear you there, man. I try my best to pick up a few CDs where I can, but it can be pretty impossible at times. However, not having the buying resources at this point in time doesn't taint the fact that you're still a fan, so keep that Kawada flag hung high and proud! :)
ReplyDeleteI agree with you there! I can't remember how I came across this blog (probably from Google Images...), but upon further viewing it's one of the few out there that caught my eye. You got to have self-enjoyment in doing something or it'll get to the point where it's more labor than fun, so it's great you've got the right mindset! :)
Thanks for the luck, chances are I'll need it in the early stages... and maybe later on, too. :P
Yeah, you're right :)
ReplyDeleteThanks for that encouragement! I'll surely keep the Kawada flag hung up high. And hopefully, with my efforts, she'd get to be known more not only in Japan~
That's true. Self-enjoyment makes it all easier. Anything you'll do would be a breeze ;D
Hmm, let's see, from what I read from you, I think you'd make a good blogger. You can express yourself easily... that's how I see it :D
Agreed, and you're very welcome! Every little thing counts in some way or another, so I'm sure someone out there has passed the Ms. Kawada's name around in their location. I don't know too many people in my area that like anime or J-Music (or both), and the ones that do don't tend to branch out and explore the vast goodness that is artists like Mami and Faylan. One of them says she's obsessed with the Shakugan no Shana series, yet never heard of Mami Kawada... I was a bit shocked, but not going to hold it against them. To each their own.
ReplyDeleteAnd thanks for the kind overview of my comments! I try not to make them too lengthy, but I tend to type up a storm... especially when it's about a topic I enjoy. That may come in handy though, so I guess it's good too. :)
Oh, and P.S.: I looked at the "About the Author" section again and I noticed you like Ms. Kurosaki! I heart her too, so thousands of props to you just for that alone! :P
Actually, I've been in that not-so-nice situation too back in high school. Most, if not all, of my classmates were not into JMusic and that kinda sucks :( They even tease me for being into it.
ReplyDeleteWow, I too was shocked with what you said about someone not knowing Mami Kawada despite being a fan of the Shana series. But yeah, to each his own.
Anyway, this college, I'm thankful that I've been meeting more people who share the same interests as mine. Have you met people like that in person already? It's really really fun~ XD
And for the lengthy comments, that's actually pretty great! Just shows how much you enjoy talking about this :) It'll surely come in handy when you get to own a blog. Sadly though that I myself feels limited because of my lack of English proficiency (>_<) Need to hone my writing more.
I see. So we both tend to be into the same artists! Nice! :D
J-Music and anime (quite possibly manga as well) were dirty words when I was in high school. This one guy used to get picked on about liking it to the point where he almost dropped out to avoid dealing with it. Thankfully those predators got bored quick and found something else to hate on. It's crazy to even fathom now.
ReplyDeleteThese days though, I don't feel like such a leper since I've been fortunate to work with a few people lately who share somewhat the same interests as me when it comes to this topic. It's great to finally be able to share my discoveries and loves with another person and not get looked down upon for it. :D
I understand the struggle with language barriers as I'm quite unequipped with a handful of them. However, I think you're doing a fantastic job with English on the blog so that counts for something! Just keep at it and it'll be a breeze for you in no time!
Similar taste in artists must mean great minds think alike then! :P I'm pretty open to lots of styles so chances are good that we may like a lot more of the same.
Oh wow. I don't know why some people would do that! Really horrible. It's great though that you've already met people who share the same interests as yours. And I think that leper metaphor fits the situation quite well. (>_<)
ReplyDeleteThanks! :) I guess with more experience, I'll eventually get to write in English better~
Yeeaah XD I guess I won't be surprised anymore if I knew you like other artists that I like too :)) There are lots of good ones out there too /o/
I figured you'd appreciate the metaphor. That's kind of what it's like out here in the US, for the most part at least. It's interesting that Japanese culture is popular, yet people who enjoy it are reviled by a large group at the same time. Doesn't stop me from liking all of it, though! :)
ReplyDeleteYou're welcome! Are you doing anything special to practice your English or do you just use translation books and the like?
Hmmm, let's see... currently I've been listening to a lot different artists. Clearly Faylan is among them, but I've also been binging on Mami again (thanks to you ;P), Megumi Hayashibara, Minori Chihara and Stereopony (their OVER THE BORDER album is fantastic). I recently discovered Aina Kase, who had a song on a Valkyrie Complex vocal album. Since you enjoy rockier stuff, you might like it. It's called Flare of Hell... I'll include a link to the album, since I can't find the single song anywhere. :)
http://www.anime-sharing.com/forum/game-osts-42/album-valkyrie-complex-vocal-album-3802/
Same here!! Nothing can stop me from liking Japanese culture, absolutely not just anyone who reviles me for liking it. ;)
ReplyDeleteIt's pretty cool to know that some Americans are liking Japanese stuffs too. Before, I outright thought that they can't be into it since they're Western, but after meeting a couple of Americans who like it, I guess I'm viewing Americans or Western people, in general, in a different light now~
Let's see, I'm really not doing anything special to practice my English. I guess I just practice by reading random texts in English XD
Oh wow, I like Minori Chihara too. And I think I'll look into Faylan more now. The first and so far, only song I've heard of hers was Mind as Judgement, and I actually liked that song. As for me, I also like... YUI, SID, Ali Project, UverWorld and other I've artists like KOTOKO, Eiko Shimamiya and MELL.
I'm liking Flare of Hell! A mysterious and rock-ish song~ Great find! /o/
You sure know where to find great music. I myself wouldn't have found her (>_<)
The way I feel is that it's pretty boring to limited yourself to one kind of anything, especially music. Just because the language is different doesn't take away from the enjoyment factor which, to me, is the most important aspect.
ReplyDeleteIt's great that you're open minded enough to not just write off Westerners as incompatible (though a lot of them still are ;P), but I can see why some would believe Japanese culture wouldn't click in the US. I mean, they're almost polar opposites in some regards. I think that's one of the things that drew me to it, it was much more exciting and entertaining than most Western media I've seen and/or heard. No matter how many odd looks I've gotten nor times I've been questioned, I'm still going to love it all! XD
That's a pretty good way to practice. I've been doing my damnedest to learn a few languages over the years and Japanese has been a lot easier than I anticipated... possibly from all the subbed anime and J-music. :D
Minori is awesome! She was one of the first artists I liked, so her music (especially anything from the Parade album) will always hold a special place. Since you're interested in hearing some Faylan (who also has a song on that Valkyrie Complex album I linked you to... it's called conspire), I could put together a zip file for you with some of her music to help get you started. Just let me know! I'm not too familiar with a few of the artists you mentioned, but I do really like KOTOKO and MELL! I'll give the others a listen pretty soon too.
I knew you'd like it. I came across her while looking for something Faylan-related, but I really dig her vocal style and fits the music perfectly in my opinion. That site the album was on has a pretty good section for various artists and/or anime-related songs, so it's a good place to look around for something new. I'll keep you in mind when I come across something I think you'd appreciate too! ;D
Yeah :)
ReplyDeleteI don't know why but despite not understanding the lyrics, I still very much get emotionally attached to Japanese songs. The style and the song arrangements are superb, the best in the world I guess XD
Actually, after getting exposed to the online JMusic fans, I'm seeing lots of Western people liking it too. Though I guess you're right that lots of them are still not into it.
I know, right! I also got to learn the most basic Japanese through subbed anime and music XD But I'm tooooo far away from learning it and using it for whatever XD
Oh, a zip file with Faylan music would be great! :)
I see you there XD Finding other things as a side effect of looking up our favorite artists. I'll be looking forward to more of your discoveries then! :)
I don't know about it being the best in the world, but I'll second the notion anyways! :) Personally, I've found Japanese music to be generally more creative than most other countries, including the US. I can connect with it more probably because of not speaking the language. For me, it makes me focus on everything else within the song, like the music arrangements and vocal melodies rather than just the lyrics.
ReplyDeleteYeah, the power of online communities have been beneficial for me as well (like this blog, for example). It helps to escape the everyday stereotypes and perceptions that come with liking things most people around you don't understand, which is always a nice option.
I'm nowhere near using Japanese in conversation form too, but I have slipped a few basic words and phrases out by accident. Got some odd looks, but oh well. It was actually pretty entertaining. XP
Man, I just realized I'd be here all day if I were to start listing my discoveries, haha. There is so much great stuff out there that I don't know where to begin, so for now I'll leave you with the Faylan zip I promised. Hope you dig it as much as I do! :P
http://www.mediafire.com/?bhwku1oo5n4gkle
The "the best in the world" part maybe was a bit exaggerated XD I agree though that Japanese music has more creativity in them than other countries' music. Hmm, I guess the thing with Japanese music is how well and addictive the song arrangements are. Plus, the lyrics are brilliant and convey pleasant and morally correct messages compared to a few foreign songs loaded with x-rated themes (-_-)
ReplyDeleteYeah, it's a good thing that the online world provides us, Japanese music fans, a catharsis for our interests :)
Haha, yes yes. It's entertaining to be able to use or even suddenly blurt out Japanese words even if no one understands XD
Oh and thanks a lot for the Faylan zip file! I'll listen to them as soon as I finish downloading~ :) We've got really slow internet here :o
Haha, that's alright 'cause I tend to exaggerate as well... mostly out of my love for the topic I'm discussing. :P I agree with the fact that it's addictive, as I've been listening ever since I discovered it, where as other things have come and gone in the mean time. I tend to like the lyrics once I take the time to learn 'em and I second that they're much more positive in their content. I love well-written lyrics, so that's a pretty big selling point for me!
ReplyDeleteI used to be very skeptical of online communities, but for some things they were the only place to go. Nowadays, I don't know what it'd be like without 'em!
I was at the store with a friend the other day and came across something and let a "kawaii" slip out. I thought I said it low enough, but she heard me. At first she didn't know what to make of it, but after I told her what it meant, she laughed and repeated the word as if to agree with me. It was pretty cool.
You're welcome for the zip! I was trying not to make it too big, but it got out of hand. :P Let me know what you think and maybe I'll hook you up again in the future (and make it easier on your computer too)! :D
Oh yeah. Same here! XD I've been listening to Japanese songs ever since I discovered them. And I guess I listen to them too much that I never had the time to listen to English or even local songs (>_<) But I'm really thankful I got to discover JMusic~ I probably would have missed half of my life if I didn't ---- I guess that's another exaggeration. Haha.
ReplyDeleteYeeaah, online communities :) A benefit the internet had for us~
Kawaii! Haha. That was a pretty cool experience indeed! (^o^) And she's pretty open-minded I must say. It's good to be around those kind of people. don't you think?
And the Faylan zip file... wow. Thanks again! It surely was a great way to start my Faylan discovery. I liked Last vision for last, Honnou no Doubt, Day of the fate but heck, all those songs in the compilation were great too! You did a good job with putting up that compilation featuring Faylan's versatility with a lot of musical styles. Very nice~ Nice indeed :D
Oh, and don't worry about those large files. No problem there :)
Nah, there is hardly ever too much of a good thing in music, especially when it's in a style that just oozes creative freedom! I'm pretty thankful to have discovered it as well, as there are times I feel behind the curve for coming into this music later than most. Not a day goes by that I'm not surprised at how much stuff I've yet to uncover... so yeah, maybe half a life has been missed in a sense! XP
ReplyDeleteShe is probably one of the most open-minded people I know, especially when it comes to music outside of the J-Pop realm. I've actually gotten her into a few of the artists I listen to regularly (she's currently heavily into Yui Aragaki) and she's starting to watch a couple anime shows. It's nice to have converted her to this wondrous culture!
I'm glad you're enjoying Faylan! She has a fantastically versatile voice and is pretty amazing (and quite kawaii... ;P) live. There are a handful of videos of her live shows on YouTube if you're interested. You won't be disappointed!
That reminds me, I stumbled across a song you may enjoy. It's called "Insanity" by Aoba Ringo... and someone else whose name escapes me. Nevertheless, it's pretty good so I'll leave you the link:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Hp6rXO6IyQ
Maybe the next time I do up a compilation, I'll put together a bunch of different artists. Sound good? :)
Sorry it took a while (*A*)
ReplyDeleteAnyway, that's true :)
Actually, after getting to know you (a bit), I must say you're really very open-minded with your discoveries... not quite like me who usually confine myself with I've Sound stuffs more recently. I hope I'd get to be as open-minded as you~
It feels really good to have someone converted into your interests, isn't it? (^-^)/
About Faylan live, I managed to watch a live perf by her at LisAni 2010 waaay before! That was the first time I saw her actually :) And she was great live! Maybe, now that you've said it, I'll be digging into more of her live vids ;)
Insanity by Aoba Ringo. It's pretty good indeed! A bit Faylan-ish and the instrumental... so awesome~
A compilation with different artists sound good!! I don't know what to espect so I'm sure I'll be surprised :D
Ha, it's cool. I'm a pretty patient person, and I'm sure you're a busy guy with school and all, so I can wait. XP
ReplyDeleteI try to be open-minded, but I tend to hideaway my interests every once in a while. For example, I once spent a better part of a year listening strictly to heavy rock-oriented J-Music with singers that had deep voices. Anything light or high-pitched was like the plague to me. I have since shrugged off such limited thinking. :P However, there is nothing wrong with liking select artists or styles though! But, I'll still keep you somewhat up-to-date on some new stuff I find so you can broaden your musical choices if you like. :)
Converting people is a good feeling. She's converted me to a few things before, so it was fun to do the same!
I have a few of Faylan's shows on DVDs that came with her albums, so I could try and put one up for you to watch. Just let me know if you're interested and I'll figure out the easiest way to get it done.
I agree with you about the song being Faylan-esque... probably why I liked it pretty quickly ;P. It's sung in a pretty different voice that she usually performs with, which is more of higher, loli-style. Still good though!
Lastly, here's that compilation! Just like the last one, I added a couple text files (just in case you're an information geek like me). Enjoy!
http://www.mediafire.com/?a13ktcrodjmyxq0
I'm really sorry but thanks a lot for understanding :)
ReplyDeleteWow, so you too actually went through a time where you selectively listen to certain types of music. But you already managed to "shrug" off that attitude~ Personally, I've been REALLY picky this past months or so. And I've been tossing aside lots of other songs. Honestly though, I think it's time for me to open up once again (>_<) Thanks to you, I think I'm opening up little by little once again. Thanks a lot really (^_^)
You have Faylan's DVDs (o_o) Cool. Well, if they're not on Youtube yet, I'll request for an internet post or something (>_<) I'd love to see how she performs.
Yeah, I guess we tend to like other songs in resemblance with our fave artists XD But yes, it's still pretty good :D
Thanks for the compilation by the way! Was quite familiar with a few songs and artists. Nonetheless, the songs were greeeaaat. And I love how you provide infos about each track ;)
I'd also love to hear more from you in the next days/weeks :)
Oh and just something I thought of: Do you have a Twitter or Facebook account perhaps? (though I prefer Twitter XD) I just thought that maybe we could share each other our ideas more with the help of those social sites~ It'll be perfectly fine though if this can't happen :D
No problem, man. :)
ReplyDeleteHa, I say I've done away with my selective listening, but I tend to go on an artist binge every now and again. Right now, it's pretty much all things Maon Kurosaki and Stereopony... probably because they each have new albums coming out soon. :D But, I'm sure I'll break off and listen to everything else after awhile. And I don't feel I've done that much, but I'm glad I could help in your branching out! Make sure you keep track of the songs you toss aside though, you may like them even more the next time around!
I've checked YouTube for some Faylan videos and I could only find a selection of songs from the live sets. Therefore, I'll work on putting up one of her shows in full for you to watch. She's really great live, both in performance and stage presence... and her band is fantastic too! I don't personally like putting things on streaming sites 'cause I feel it takes away from the overall quality... plus it's better to have long videos saved so you don't have to wait on it loading up every time. So, I'll try my best to make the parts small enough so you can download 'em quicker! :)
You're welcome for the comp, glad you liked it and appreciate the detailed listings! I figured you would have heard some (if not most) of the stuff in it, seeing as most of the songs/artists are pretty popular and/or anime-related. Aoi Koufuku and Snowstorm are probably two of my all-time favorite songs! I'll put off another one until after the Faylan set it done... that way maybe I'll have stumbled upon some new stuff! XD
Yes, I have a Facebook and had a Twitter at one point. I use Facebook more regularly though, as Twitter never really appealed to me. But anyways, I wouldn't mind messaging on there... I can't believe I didn't think of it sooner! Ha. I'll add you right after this! Just look for a request with a white dog... :D
Oh yeah. I'll make sure to keep track of the songs I toss aside (^_^) I just realized that I've been keeping my doors shut for other artists, and it's not a pretty good thing. Listening to a certain artist for a very long time would eventually make me sick of his/her music. So, even small efforts from someone to make me branch out is helpful :)
ReplyDeleteFaylan live vids! I'll be looking forward to those!! XD But take your time though. And yeah, I totally agree. Nowadays I'm more towards getting complete live vids for myself than streaming them online. It also feels nice to have some vids for my own "collection" XD
And yeah, I'll also be looking forward to more anisongs/Japanese songs from you~ :D
Oh, by the way, feel free to leave me a message anytime on Facebook (if that's more convenient for you) about these stuffs (^o^)/
Hey man, sorry for the delay. In case you didn't see my message on Facebook, I've been busy at work... hence the LATE reply. :P
ReplyDeleteI know what you mean there, I've found myself growing uninterested in a few artists after continuous listens. That's usually a sign that we need to move on to something else for a bit just so we can come back to the one's we were listening to without burning ourselves out! Don't let that happen with Mami! ;)
So, the Faylan concert is done and uploaded to Mediafire. It's split into 10 parts, each of which should be around 95MBs or so. Once you download 'em all, just extract 'em from part one... hope that's not too confusing.
The link to the folder is:
http://www.mediafire.com/?togsifiboloag
The password is: Live&Loud
Enjoy!
Nah, it's perfectly fine. :)
ReplyDeleteI see. Now I think that's really where I'm going right now, but as you said, I won't let that happen with Mami... Never XD
Haha, I get the procedures. Thanks a lot for putting up those live videos though! I'll be digging into those soon~
